Teething Relief
Ice cubes wrapped in a washcloth seemed to be what Trixie liked the most during her first teething ordeal.

Wow. I wish I could still sit like that. Posted by: Ann at April 30, 2004 01:24 AM

Such a sad TPOD - she looks so forlorn. Never seen little Trixie looking like her sparkle is so dampened. Don't you know TPOD is here to cheer us up? No more sad pictures, I can't take it. Posted by: hannah at April 30, 2004 09:35 AM

Although, if you look at the background, you can see the joy of BenMac and Jennifer. That's what the toys look like after: "Hey, maybe this is what you want, huh, huh? Is this it? Will this make you stop crying? No? Okay, well maybe this, then? Will this make you stop crying? No? Well how about if I rock you and bounce you a little bit? Oh, that's working, a little, but only because I think you're scared. Oh, and your father's back isn't made for this. How about this toy? No, still crying? How about this, then, or this and this together? No? Well how about this washcloth and some ice cubes? Oh, that's what you wanted. Oh, good. Great. We got lots of that. You couldn't have just asked?" ;) Posted by: FrumDad at April 30, 2004 06:25 PM

We agree. It's like trying to find your keys... it's always the last place you look. Posted by: jen/mom at April 30, 2004 08:26 PM

That's because when you find them, you stop looking. :) Posted by: istya at May 2, 2004 03:13 PM

Cute pic and great teething idea, although you really REALLY want to discourage that w-sitting before it becomes too hard to change. It makes for bad knees, hips and lots of problems. Don't tell her not to sit that way at this point, just re-arrange her in an "Indian" sitting position. Honestly, this is a really bad, very common, habit. Posted by: IbePiglet at May 8, 2004 12:35 PM

Now that you point this behavior out, I notice that she does this *all the time*. But she doesn't mind when we re-arrange her. Thanks for the tip! Posted by: benmac at May 11, 2004 12:22 AM

Adult yoga students everywhere work very hard to regain/achieve that "w" pose that is so natural for children. Try googling "virasana." Posted by: YogaMom at May 11, 2004 04:07 AM

I'm curious where IbePiglet found that info about that sitting position causing problems later in life. I've never heard that before. My grandfather is in his late 80's and is still able to sit like that at his age. I can't even sit like that! I used to always sit like that as a kid though. I remember in a college dance class we would do a sort of variation on that as a warm up exercise. The more I look at the photo, the more I'm wanting to try to sit like that again. :) Only now I think my leg would snap off like a Barbie doll's leg. Once you stop doing it for a long time your legs won't let you go that route anymore. Bummer! Posted by: RandomGenericName at May 12, 2004 03:34 AM

Is that a lightbulb in the background? Posted by: Allison at April 30, 2005 12:33 PM

Nope - just a plastic ball. Posted by: benmac at April 30, 2005 12:49 PM

As a kid I was always told not to sit like this. Since then I've asked many yoga teachers, bodywork specialists, and others--they say it's fine as long as you don't feel a painful strain in the knee. So if you sit this way comfortably, great, and if it hurts work towards it cautiously and carefully. I sit this way very comfortably. Sitting "Indian Style," --as I was often forced to sit as a kid, hurts like the dickens and always has. Posted by: Allie at May 1, 2005 03:45 PM

I sat like this all through preschool and because of it my hips are actually turned in slightly now and my feet turn in a bit... Sometimes not being able to sit Indian Style has its drawbacks :) Posted by: Kristen at May 1, 2005 07:57 PM
