The metabolism of an 11-month old

Trixie is messing up my metabolism. It’s a direct result of the new feeding schedule. We spend hours at the highchair now: breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. And because you’re supposed to eat with your baby to reinforce the idea that eating is for everybody, I’ve been sitting down too. So I’ve gotten used to having all these tiny little meals spread throughout the day instead of just the big two (brunch and dinner) that I used to do. When it gets to be 4:00 in the afternoon, I can feel my blood sugar dropping, and I’m like, dammit, why is she still asleep? It’s time for vanilla wafers and apple juice.

Of course, this is messing up dinnertime as well. Jenn comes home starving, but I’m never that hungry for a big meal anymore. Plus, she gets upset because when I’m full, I’ve started pushing my peas around the plate and then throwing the whole thing on the floor in an exhausted fit.

I believe that’s actually the way your metabolism is supposed to be. Big meals weren’t a part of human culture until agriculture – when we were hunter-gatherers, we “grazed” like every other animal.

Could the new feeding schedule be contributing to a different sleep schedule? Trixie’s sleep cartography seems to reveal the beginning of what must be a pleasing pattern – long uninterrupted sleep at night and two sizable naps each day. Is this getting closer to the ideal sleep map? Actually, looking back at the original ideal sleep map, Trixie’s emerging pattern looks like it might be better than you dreamed during those dark days of January…

I can’t believe I know this much about your kid.

P.S. Keeping my fingers crossed for a new diaper leak record!

Oh no!! I just checked the diaper leak record & an accident happened! I was keeping my fingers crossed for the record to be broken too! This is like Atari where you have to start back at the very beginning of a game when you mess up (unlike Playstation where you can continue where you left off). Now it will be forever (or 17 days) until we reach that level again!

Ben, are you ever just the tiniest bit tempted to just pretend that a little diaper accident didn’t happen? :)

I also had been hoping for a new leak-free record. Poor Ben – so close and yet so far!

I’m not taking responsibility for this spill. I’m not going to name names or anything, but let’s just say that if it wasn’t me…

I forgot to mention that it was a changing table accident.

Ben, I think the problem is you’re just failing to keep up here on all fronts. You’ve done an excellent job with the new feeding schedule for you both, but Trixie is just trying to give you subtle feedback that your naps aren’t up to par. I suggest either laying down, tossing and turning, and crying to let her know it’s time to get up and eat, or perhaps an intravenous vanilla-wafer infusion.

Trixie should have snapped a picture of you during your “exhaused fit” and posted it to her site.
